First Method Ziegler-Nichols Tuning Method •Ziegler-Nichols tuning method to determine an initial/estimated set of working PID parameters for an unknown system •Usually included with industrial process controllers and motor controllers as part of the set-up utilities –Some controllers have additional autotune routines. J.G. Ziegler and N.B. Nichols published two tuning methods for PID controllers in 1942. This article describes in detail how to apply one of the two methods, sometimes called the Ultimate Cycling method. (The other one is called the process reaction-curve method.) 2004-09-01 The standard reference for PID tuning seems to be the Ziegler-Nichols tuning rules developed in 1942 on a pneumatic controller. Here is how to tune a controller using these rules: Remove integral actions from the controller by setting it to either 0 if it is in units of reset.
A Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller is a three-term controller that has a long history in the automatic control field, starting from the beginning of the last century. Owing to its intuitiveness and its relative simplicity, in addition to satisfactory performance which it is able to provide with a wide range of processes, it has become in practice the standard controller in Ziegler Nichols is not the most ideal method for tuning physical systems, as it can require putting the system into a marginally stable state. Another method of Ziegler Nichols tuning method analyzes the response of the system to a step disturbance; and does not require putting the system at the edge of stability.

The Ziegler-Nichols method is another popular method of tuning a PID controller, this was established in 1942 (Cohen ad Coon, 1953). It is very similar to the trial and error method wherein I and D are set to zero and P is increased until the loop starts to oscillate.

However, other settings have been recommended that are closer to critically damped control (so that oscillations do not propagate downstream). A. Ziegler-Nichols PID Tuning Method. Ziegler and Nichols developed heuristic methods for determining the parameters of a PID controller. The Autotuning Wizard and PID VIs that use the PID Relay autotuning technique use this method..

Explore the 3 PID tuning methods Ziegler-Nichols tuning method. In the industry, Ziegler-Nichols rules are often applied. Typically, these rules result Cohen-Coon tuning method.
Still then, the methods are commonly known as Ziegler-Nichols method. Substantial amount of research has been carried out on tuning of P-I-D controllers since Ziegler-Nichols tuning rule was the first such effort to provide a practical approach to tune a PID controller. Jan 1, 2004 extensive overview of tuning rules for PI or PID controllers is given in O'Dwyer [26 ]. 2.3.1.
